A local tradition in Charleston kicks off Saturday, February 11th expecting to draw in hundreds of people from around Southern Oregon who come for the food and the fun.

"Spend your extra day in Charleston for…Leap Year," is the slogan you'll see on posters around town, promoting this year's 27th Annual Charleston Crab Feed.

The menu consists of full or half crab, side dishes, bread & beverage. Great prize drawings and a bake sale will also be taking place during the feed.

Meals are $17 for a whole crab, and $13 for half a crab.
The feed February 11th from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm at the Charleston School off of Seven Devils Road.

This event serves as the main fund-raising event for the Charleston Community and Visitor's Center.

The Crab Feed is a production of the Charleston Merchant’s Association with the support from the Charleston Marina Complex of the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, Charleston Volunteer Fire Department and the Coos Bay-North Bend Visitors & Convention Bureau.

Crabbing in Oregon

The Oregon limit is 12 Dungeness crab per person and an inexpensive license is required. While crabs can be caught year around, the best time September through early winter. Many will take their chance and crab off of one of the many piers. Yet experts know that crabbing is best when done from an ocean vessel. Crabbing in the ocean is closed for Dungeness crab from October 16 to (usually) November 30. This year, opening date was December 15 from just north of the Rogue River on north. South of the Rogue River, crabbing season is expected to start January 15, 2012.

The best pier crabbing can be found in Crescent City, Bandon and Coos Bay.

Winter Fishing

It is the time of the year that winter fishing kicks into high gear with the steelhead season getting ready to pick up. Steelhead fishing season is considered to be December through March, with February to be the peak season. Steelhead are considered to be the hardest fighting freshwater fish in North America and they are plentiful on the Oregon Coast. This area boasts of some of the best steelhead fishing rivers including the Rogue, Chetco, Coos, Coquille, Elk,Tenmile, Eel, and Umpqua Rivers.

Whale migration is underway and now is the time to come out to the coast to see the action. Whale watching week is the last week of December when specified points are staffed by volunteers. Shore Acres State Park Holiday Display

Shore Acres State Park holiday lights display starts up on Thanksgiving and continues through New Year's Eve, from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM every night. The Garden House is open and supplied with lots of hot cider, punch, coffee and cookies! There are 300,000 lights making it the largest holiday lights display on the coast. Information.

Mushroom Hunting Time

The rains have come a bit early this fall and that is great news for mushroom hunters. The next several days promise to be sunny and it is time to venture out to pick those yummy mushrooms. If you are new to mushroom picking, it is highly recommended that rookies should take a class prior to joining in the hunt. There are several workshops held at SWOCC in Brookings, usually in mid-November.

The Week After Labor Day

There are an incredible number of great activities on the Oregon coast this week after Labor Day, 9/6 - 9/11/11.

From 9/6 - 9/10/11 is the Annual Indian Creek Fish Hatchery 'Summer Salmon Derby'. All proceeds go to the Indian Creek Salmon Hatchery. For more information, call 800-525-2334. This derby is being organized by CAF volunteers & Rogue Outdoor Store.

From 9/9 - 9/11/11 is Bandon's 64th annual Cranberry Festival. Old Town Bandon is full of activities, special events and shopping.

In 9/10/11 is the 4th annual Gold Beach Brew & Art Festival. This year will be bigger and better than ever with 45 or more kegs of beer available throughout the day. Two stages of music and great food round out the event. There will also be a classic car show put on by the Rogue Ramblers the day of the event.

Also on 9/10/11 is the Bike the Rogue cycle event. There are 22 and 40 mile routes, much of it along the scenic world famous Rogue River.

As if that is not enough, the 2011 Bandon Salmon Fishing Derby kicks off on 9/6 and continues through October 15.

While many consider the Oregon coast to be rainy this time of year, the truth is that we get lots of rain, then lots of sunshine and mild weather. At night, we can have lightening strikes across the ocean horizon, followed by downpours. But moments later, it is mild and sunny with a chance to get out and enjoy the show with a stroll along the beach.

The coast is great to visit any time of the year.

Glass Balls in Gold Beach

The best place to find glass floats is in Gold Beach. Every week for three months a dedicated group of volunteers “plants” (on average), 150 glass balls along a three-mile stretch of beach. During February, they will all be red for the ‘lover’ in all of us. More balls are “planted” around Valentines Day and Spring Break.

Each ball is ‘tagged’ with a message that reads, “Show this glass ball to the Gold Beach Visitor Center Staff and enter to win a monthly drawing for a prize package valued at over $200.00 (local lodging, dining and jet boat tour gift certificates). One entry per person per month.

Many people avoid the Oregon Coast during the winter because of the storms. Yet it is the dramatic winter storms that make coming to the coast so much fun.

Reserve a hotel room with a view of the ocean and watch the storms come in. The rain and wind can be wild. Some times, there is lightening over the ocean and that is a light show to behold. Yet it does not rain all the time. The storms are usually brief during the day, lasting anywhere from just a few minutes, to a couple of hours. Then the sun comes out making it a perfect time to take a stroll on the beach to observe nature's power and look for agates.

After particularly strong storms, hand made glass balls (Japanese glass fishing floats) still wash up more than 70 years after they stopped using them.

Between storms, the coast is typically warm. The sun can come out for days at a time and it can feel like summer or early fall. Golfers and hikers enjoy themselves at their activities without the crowds.

An additional benefit is that the hotels usually deeply discount so you can stay in that luxury hotel room for a fraction of the price it would cost during the summer. Most restaurants are still open and it is easy to get a table, usually without a reservation.

So stop on by and enjoy our best kept secret.

There will be three hours of live music by various South Coast musicians beginning at 7:00pm. Our old fashioned barn dances are easy to learn, with no costume, partner or experience necessary. Beginnings are welcome and should arrive early in the evening, when the dances and figures are taught more completely.

James Hutson, a renowned caller from Palo Alto California, will teach and call a variety of lively social dances including contra, lines, and squares. Wear your dancing shoes and bring a friend. For the past year, Gold Beach, Oregon, had a contest to win $10,000 in gold. To win, contestants simply had to enter (no purchase was necessary), but the community hoped to attract more visitors to the area.

On Saturday, September 11, the city had the drawing. The winner was a couple who were in Gold Beach on their honeymoon. They originally planned on getting married a year earlier, but postponed due to illness.

The couple will be treated to another weekend in beautiful Gold Beach.

Due to the change in the price of gold, the current value of their prize is about $13,000.

Bandon's Cranberry Festival is held the second weekend in September. It started in 1946 to showcase the local cranberry industry. Bandon has long been known as the Cranberry Capital of Oregon and new bogs are being added every year. While most of the local berries are made into juice concentrate or frozen, some are sold fresh or dried and can be found in our local stores, while still more are made into wine. The parade is held on Saturday morning and grows larger every year, people come as far away as Humboldt County to participate. After the parade, enjoy the many vendors who sell their unique wares.

Crabbing is always great fun and the crab is a tasty reward, but during the month of September, in Winchester Bay, a cash prize makes crabbing VERY rewarding. Crab are tagged with numbered metal tags. One of those numbers is sealed in the vault of Umpqua Bank. If you register that number before the end of the contest, you win the cash prize. The envelope will be opened on October 1 at 3:00 pm at the Sportmen's Cannery to see if Captain Umpclaw has been caught again this year and the $1,000 prize awarded. If he was not caught there will be a lottery of those turning in tags (17 to date), and prizes of $500, $300 and $200 will be given. There is still time and tags must be turned into our sponsor, Sportsmen's Cannery on October 1 by 2:00 pm.

The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers District 5 will be hosting its Fifth Annual Old Time Music Jamboree at the Winchester Bay Community Center in Winchester Bay in August. Last year's event attracted over 100 musicians and had enthusiastic audiences. We expect this year to be even better!

Musicians from all over Pacific Northwest and Northern California will be singing and playing fiddles, guitars, banjos and mandolins at the Grange Hall, the Gazebo, camp grounds and on the docks around town. Get ready to hear a wide variety of music including country, Cajun, swing, bluegrass, folk, waltzes and old time tunes. Open jam sessions will be going on all day long, with concerts at the Grange Hall every evening at 6:00pm. Admission is by donation. There will be a Gospel show on Sunday to close the event.

The first major windsurfing contest to be held on the Oregon coast in nearly a decade is coming to Gold Beach the 17th through the 20th of June. The Gold Beach Fairgrounds will be hosting the contestants and the event parties.

The venue is to be the Pistol State Park at "The Rock". The wavesailing portion of the event is to be held on the best two days of wind and waves of the four day waiting period.

There will be a skippers meeting held at 10:00 each day of the event to decide whether conditions will permit heats to be run. We hope to have announcements on the local radio stations KGBR and KURY between 10 and 10:30 on the status of the contest each day. On any days of calm or lighter winds, there will be clinics, demonstrations, Stand Up Paddling events and possibly sandsailing on the minus tides those mornings. There is already an impressive field of more then 60 men and women signed up with professional riders from Maui as well as quite a few serious amateurs sailors from Brookings, Gold Beach, Pistol River, the Gorge, and from as far as Canada and the East Coast.

Come meet the competitors at the opening dinner at the Fairgrounds 7pm on the 16th. Dinner is $10. Friday night "Wave Train" from Maui will play music with a $5 cover. Saturday night will feature the "the Pistol River Social Club", also with a $5 cover. Sunday night will be the closing party hosted by DJ King with no charge at the door.

ODFW has lifted the ban on retention of Wild Spring Chinook effective May 22. Rogue River Spring Chinook anglers will be able to keep two Wild Rogue River Chinook for the rest of the year in their two fish bag limit! This is the first time this has been allowed for several years.

The most recent Rogue River Spring Chinook counts at Gold Rey counting station is 3,794 on May 9th. 9 days 2,277 Spring Chinook crossed the dam - that equates to 253 Springers per day! These are huge days for the Rogue!

The rain we had yesterday is great news for fishing. Lower Rogue water temps had moved up 5 degrees this week to near 62 degrees at Agness. The higher temperatures means fewer fish caught. However, the rain should give the river a freshet and drop river temps. We should see a fairly strong surge of fresh Springers enter the Rogue River over the next week - a rainy weather period with cooler air temps looks to be in place for most of the week. This is great news for Springers to come in and those already making there way 145 miles to the upper river.

Hiking Craigs Creek Trail near Crescent City, California

There is a beautiful hiking trail located just outside the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park called Craigs Creek Trail. Why hike just outside the park? Dogs are not allowed inside the redwoods park and this is a great hike for those interested in taking their puppy along. The trail follows the south fork of the Smith River and ends along a small beach and camping area. For more information, check out the website.

Annual Wine Art & Music Festival

The annual Wine Art & Music Festival is scheduled for Gold Beach this weekend, May 15 and 16. This is one of the biggest events along the Oregon coast and is loads of fun. Don't miss it.

The Wine Festival is held at the Curry County Event Center in Gold Beach, Oregon. Hours are on Saturday are from 11 am to 7 pm and Sunday from noon to 5 pm.

Over 15 regional wineries will be present along with over forty artists, artisans & crafters plus delicious cuisine from local chefs. There will be live Music including Jazz, Folk & Funk. For those who prefer beer, there will be a brew pub featuring micro brews.

Admission is $10 for guests 21 and over which includes a limited-edition, commemorative wine glass and a free tasting. Guests under 21 are admitted free.

The Gold Beach Hospice is once again open for donations on Saturday from 11 AM - 2 PM.

There is also a mini-sale, a retail store, open from 9 AM - 2 PM. This store is only open once a month in April and May, so this is one of the few opportunities to shop before the huge August sale.

A wild couple of weeks - authentic glass balls

We have had a wild couple of weeks, weatherwise, here on the Oregon Coast. Lots and lots of rain, which makes it a lot of fun for storm watchers. In the process, we have had authentic glass balls wash up on the beaches.

By authentic Japanese and Chinese glass balls were used as floats in fishing nets. These were widely used in the early to mid-20th century and are no longer used. The ones for sale in stores are typically reproductions made in China.

However, as a result of the storms, we have authentic glass ball floats washing up. Some are huge in size.
